Tena koe Papa Bruce! Thank you so much for the AMAZING weekend. Your whare was awesome and warm and was the perfect scene for our mahi, as was your korero at the beginning! What an amazing gift to share with our roopu – thank you. I WISH I had recorded it (with your permission) as it was a most inspiring korero. We spoke further throughout the hui about the kaumatua on the wall, your messages about never giving up and overall the answers to all our problems lie in ourselves and our tikanga! It was an experience I myself and undoubtedly those rangatahi will never forget. Aroha nui! From myself and the rangatahi of Matike Mai Aotearoa! |

Tena koe me to whanau. Our people were just full of arohanui. They just loved the marae and the space and what you've done at Taputeranga. Peter Whaanga our speaker was amazing and some of the homeless must have heard they could break out of the homeless mentality with encouragement and plenty of aroha and manaakitanga. Thanks for making our stay warm experience. |

Sunny Hawkes Bay Greetings to you and your whanau Bruce! I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to you and all the people that have made Tapu Te Ranga a home. It is a home with an art gallery, the sprirituality of church and a university of wisdom. Our time with you was a great experience to share with our students from Eastern Institute of Technology. The students really responded to your stories through their artwork. The visit was short the the memories and invigoration lingers long. Many thanks, Paula |

Kia Ora Bruce
It is hard to describe in words the experience we have had over the last few days staying with you at Tapu Te Ranga. The experience touched every one of us, in different ways and on different levels. The Whare we lived in, now lives in us.
One of the highlights for me was how the students artworks showed that they were absorbing the wisdom that yourself and Pare shared so willingly, their minds were beginning to open, and they were allowing the Kotuku to land. Most of them managed to overcome the difficulties of working in groups, and I am sure that your wisdom and Tapu Te Ranga was guiding them in this as well.
And something that none of the groups mentioned, is that the canvases we used for the artworks are recycled, I found them a couple of months ago in a second hand shop, and now I know why!
Thankyou so much to yourself, Helima, Hirini and Pare for your warmth and hospitality,
and thankyou Bruce for your dreams and your vision. Na mihi nui, Raewyn

I just needed to share with you a little of how much Tapu Te Ranga affected me personally.
After your talk we went off to visit the galleries. Whilst I still love art in the galleries, I realised then just how special your whare is, the art in Tapu te Ranga is alive, alive with your whanau, alive with all who come to see it, to sleep with it, to eat with it, to be guided by it.
I am also passionate about architecture and ecological design, and deeply concerned at the way the world is consuming the gifts from Papatuanuku. In the last year of my degree I looked at ways of combining Maori Eco-knowledge with contemporary eco-design, using John Scott and Amanda Yates work as guidance. I can't believe that I had not heard about Tapu te Ranga before, as it is a living example of how this can be achieved. But, I guess that I was supposed to experience it, rather than read about. Thankyou so much for your talk. Reading books cannot compare to words spoken with passion.
I think for myself that the Kotuku landed many, many times over the years, but much of the understanding has remained hidden from me because of my Pakeha ways of learning. Thankyou for furthering my understanding, for helping me to connect a few more pieces of the jigsaw puzzle in my head.
My only regret is that I personally would have loved to have much more time to sit and talk and listen.

These summer nights I sleep with my door open because it’s on the edge of our native bush reserve- so this extra sweet air wafts in plus there are often special sounds. Like the ones last night- a gentle wind rattled our chimes and a tui mimicked them with its own bongs and gongs almost the same sound as the metal chimes but with a distinctive tui accent. |

Our First Hot Water
We didn’t have any hot water for the first 10 years-well not the kind that comes out of a tap. To have showers, we lit a fire under a 44 gallon drum, then one had a choice of bath or shower-for shower one bucketed hot water into a smaller drum that was hanging off a tree- hoisted it up and turned on a tap that fed a ‘shower rose’- consisted of a jam tin with nail holes in the bottom.
So it was a big day when we scoured some 2nd hand Hot Water Cylinders-took a few weeks to put it all together-we finished at 3am-threw the switch-and waited until daylight for our big moment.

We were just watching you talking on your Kaitiaki doco about your struggle to save the beautiful point in Wellington. I was moved to tell you how awesome we think you are. Your bravery-your strength and your aroha to create such a special place are all fantastic.
You are a tower of strength and determination and what you have achieved and continue to achieve with your life is an inspiration to others.
Years ago I visited Tapu Te Ranga, we were blown away by the heart and soul of your place.
Aotearoa is a lucky country to have you in it. So cool to see you still working so hard, still giving much of yourself for the benefit of our beautiful planet. We wish there were more like you.
Long may your loving warrior heart beat strongly?

Kia Ora Bruce:
I want to say thank you personally and on behalf of my group for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to us by yourself, family and mates at Tapu Te Ranga on our weekend with you. The marae was the perfect place for the shamanic workshop, and we felt especially honoured to be offered the sacred women’s whare for our work. Shamanism feels to me so totally aligned with Maori beliefs and traditional spiritual practices in relation to whenua that this was the ideal location for the teaching.
Please pass along my thanks to Wai, Halima, your daughter and Ian for their care and many kindnesses.
For your personal reading and as a contribution to the marae library, I have put into the mail a copy of my book Other Ways of Knowing: Recharting Our Future with Ageless Wisdom. This may serve as a tangible expression of my thanks.
I look forward to my next visit to Tapu Te Ranga, with the opportunity for another yarn with you. Keep well and keep up the wonderful good work.
Best wishes, JOHN The Eagle connection.

Hearing the history of the buildings was amazing and the children enjoyed exploring the whare and grounds. It is a magical place for kids and adults alike. Many thanks to Bruce and his whanau for taking such good care of us.

Then when we popped out at the bottom of the hill we found the entrance to Manawa Karioi and the incredible building of Tapu Te Ranga Marae. The worlds largest recycled wooden building, it is a home for many, spawned of the Maori reniassance and anger of the 1970's. It is fascinating stuff. The kaumatua is Bruce Stewart, known for his angry prose and verse as part of the disconnected urban Maori. I have a cherished copy of his book "Tama" that I have had for many years....
Pono
It is possible to quieten me
for a while by blocking your ears
At times I've been buried - hidden
for centuries
but I will always surface
...sometimes with a scream
for there are those
who have nothing left but
their bodies - voices
Take your hands from your ears
hear their screams

Recently we had a small local primary school staying over. I quoted the proverb, 'He Kotuku rerenga tahi' (once in a life time you see a White Heron). I said the spiritual meaning is that seeing a Kotuku is a very rare experience. The underlying truth is that 'some important information...an oportunity to change...might fly passed you once. If you are not awake or receptive you may miss out...it may not fly pass again.
I said I remained fully opened with many questions...waiting for the Kotuku. It may come in the form of a small child saying or doing something. By keeping fully open The Kotuku flys past often.
In relpy, a student from the school wrote this poem...
I haven't really tried
waiting
for the White Heron because
I am afraid it
won't come
and will leave me
flailing in a quagmire
of unanswered questions.
But you have thrust
the truth
into my greedy hands
and now
I know that the epiphany
will not
always be delivered by majestic wings
but by a child,
a dandelion;
the ordinary,
the overlooked.
Thank you.

Bruce,
The whole group was amazed and inspired by staying at your place. They were moved by the ritual, your talk, the long chant by the young ones, the kai, the bonfire and felt that it was a great place to carry out our work in. It was also a very good experience early on in the week to allow the students to make new friends by staying with each other. We had much subsequent discussion over motivated community members like yourself and what students might be able to do for communities that don't have someone so proactive and creative making changes and building new lives. That will be further discussed in our publication as we wonder where architects and architecture students can fit into this puzzle.
Many thanks and much love to your strong whanau, the strong house which is your mother, and the chatter of the birds and insects in your vege garden.

Kia ora te whanau o Tapu te Ranga Marae. Many thanks for the warm and wonderful stay. Our music and art students from Bay of Plenty Polytech had an amazing experience at the marae. Their hearts and minds were opened to look at the world in a more holistic way. One of the things that stuck with me was to "have a dream" then work hard towards it. The marae has the hard work and dreams of so many people imbued within it - it is truly a special place of the people. Kia ora |

Kiaora Papa Bruce,
Hope this email finds you and your whānau well. Our time with you all was all too short and yet we came away having sat amongst the people of which all the generations were present in our day through meeting at the table talking over kai. I loved it.
Our rangatahi presented their kaupapa in the whare kai at lunch time and initiated a reciprocal response from the roopu from the whareherehere. We were both fed as a result and the rangatahi were overwhelmed as the tikanga of our old people was demonstrated in kind to them for their contribution to all as a whole.
I wanted to tell you that because I remember your korero. That we as a people have to learn to live together again. That day we as a roopu got to taste that again and I want to thank you.
To note Papa. I have moved roles and although I am sure we will meet again Te Pātaka Uara is now being administrated by Amon Heremia. You’ll love him when the time comes for Te Rau Tipu to move onto the marae again. I will process the invoice and I have cc’d Amon in so that he’s in the loop.
Lovely to hear from you Papa

Thanks a million for letting us stay and hold the yoga and detoxification retreat in your Marae. staying overnite in Tapu Te ranga Marae was a very enriching experience for me and my group of friends. I will always remember your awesome marae. You have created heaven on earth. It is unbelievable that the huge Marae is built with recycled materials. Malo Ni Bruce mate fanau, well its been a month now since we stayed at Tapu te Ranga Marae and like others that were at our fanau reunion, we are still talking about our wonderful experience. The thought of driving into Wellington (for the 1st time) was so overwhelming for me, I nearly gave in my apologies. I'm so glad I didn't, so I encourage others who are in this dilemma, if I can do it, so can you. I assure you the experience will be worth it! Fakahetai (thankyou) Bruce for sharing your dream and encouraging us to do the same. Blessings to you and your beautiful whanau for this coming year! With all our love.....toha ni! |

In October and November 2010 we held a two day workshop to help environmental community groups plan and monitor the work they do in our parks and reserves. Tapu Te Ranga Marae was the perfect place to have this event. The facilities were excellent and the room lay out worked really well for our large group. The food was plentiful and received many compliments. The forest of Manawa Karioi provided the perfect place to get away and do some practical work. Bruce, the talk you gave was inspiring and it really set the scene for what the people at the workshop are trying to achieve. Doing great things and making huge changes with what little resources they can find. Thank you for your understanding and hospitality. |
