Maraea

We have stayed at Tapu te Ranga Marae on a number of occasions for hui with our Maori Networks and for staff training. The hospitality and history of the marae provided by Bruce and his whanau always provide positive talking points amongst our visitors. We will be visiting again in the very near future.

We all had a fabulous time and really appreciated all of the extra activities by you and the whole whanau. The place and envioronment and hospitality are just wonderful. The students have been putting together some photos and words about their experience and I will make sure that something comes your way as soon as we are able.Soon we will talk to you some more about next year!

I bought some timber on Trademe-this is the reply I received back.
Dear Bruce...Your auction price was a good deal more than I expected. I do not want you to be dissapointed so i have reduced the price so that you'll be happy with your purchase.
Best wishes B Famton

I was from the group of Art and Design students from Whanganui UCOL who travelled down to Tapu Te Ranga Marae with Leigh Anderton and Keith Grinter last week to stay on the Wednesday night/Thursday morning. Everything about this Marae absolutly humbled me with it's rich heritage and the love and support and co-operation that went into allowing the Marae to be what it is today. As a pakeha student, I was inspired by all the facets I got to see and learn about the Marae during our class stay, as this was a new experience for me that I will often look back to. This experience helps to inspire me to continue with my studies at UCOL and to work hard to achieve the best I can reach for.
Thank You to Bruce and Pare for their hospitality and knowlodge.
Thank You again,
Samantha Scott

He mihi tino aroha ki a koutou, ki a tatou katoa.

This is the fourth year I have bought Victoria University classes to Tapu Te Ranga for a noho marae. As always it is the highlight of the course for many of the students and as the kaiako it is the best place to be talking about cross-cultural discourses, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, bi-culturalism, gender and kaupapa taiao. The pedagogy of teaching on the marae is tika for me and it is a blessing that year after year when I ring you Bruce to arrange holding these noho at Tapu Te Ragna marae you welcome me with a generosity of spirit and kindness in support of this kaupapa.

Many of the non-Maori students from my classes reflect back on their time at Tapu Te Ranga and talk about it as a profound expereince, an opening of learning and a place where they were able to sense a deeper understanding of the place of tangata whenua in Aotearoa. He miharo tena.

No reira e te rangatira a Bruce me to whanau hoki, he mihi aroha ki a koutou.

Kia Ora Bruce and Whanau - This is a little belated but I have only just discovered your website. I wanted to thank you all for the wonderful Harvest Festival. For my little family it was a day of feeling at home, relaxed, uplifted, soothed, and inspired. I particularly enjoyed the tour of the whare with a lovely woman whose name I have forgotten, but her presence matched the building and greatly enhanced my respect for what you have created together. Upaiko (sp?) the women's whare was my favourite. Anyhow - we came back a second day and would love to come back next year if you hold it again. I think the numbers of participants will only grow as people come to know what is being offered. Your grandsons who sung by the way were amazing. Arohahui, Jo

It was my luck that I tagged onto the back of a group of people who were being welcomed onto your Marae. It was my first visit to a Marae and my good luck that
you were having a special ceremony to welcome Sir Michael Fowler, The Sisters of Compassion and others. I found it very meaningful and emotional. I wasn’t the only
one wiping a tear.
The Tour of the buildings was also so profound; I’d like to do it again. I hope you have your Harvest Festival again next year. Your Marae is a very special, way-out-by-itself place to visit. Thankyou.

Kia ora te whanau o Tapu Te Ranga

We had a supberb time at the Harvest Festival, it was the first time we had ever visited the Marae and were touched by the warmth, kindness and kaupapa. Its such a remarkable place that we felt so enriched for the experience. The mahi you have done over all these years for people would have saved the government many many millions. Forever may you thrive. Kia kaha. With love Terese (Taranaki Iwi) and Owen

Dearest Koro Bruce
Just a note to say we are thinking of you at this special time of the harvest festival. We are sending you our love and maybe a little more strength. We know it will be an amazing time and only wish we could be there, home with you to help. We are sorry we are so far away. Good luck with it all. A little news for you, we are having another baby due in August. Another miracle to add to the family. We love you all so much and miss you terribly. With love Viliami, Sarah, Gracie and Tommy xxxxx

We’re working hard towards the opening of our Harvest Festival.
Sometimes I’ve thought there’s too much to do…I can no longer do what was once easy…we’re not going to make it but then I’m hit with the thought that if it’s not this year then I’ll be worse next year. Plus Sir Michael Is getting older…so are the Sisters...so am I.
So like an old had-it warrior who can no longer strap on his armour…my young kids dress me… pull on my pants, my shoes and do my hair as I can no longer reach that high. They build a pyramid of pallets so I can climb into my digger. Once I fire her up and have the controls…I’m fired up…I’m no longer ‘the-had-it-old-man…I’m Robocop with a job to do.I take a bottle to piss in as getting out is too hard. My body can’t do what it used to so I find other ways.
Many pain-killers later…when I’ve finished. There’s no bounce in my step they half carry me back to my lazi-boy. I turn back into the had-it old man…though if you look hard…there’s a wee twinkle in my eye.

Kia Ora, Bruce!
I am the Japanese girl who visit your place on 16th and 17th October 2009. I am sorry it took me so a long time to contact you. But now I am home, and I want to say thank you for your kind.
I stayed the Marae and shared some experiences with people from Great Barrier island. It was really a exciting experience for me. I haven't heared about any other Marae like this. I think the connection of the people in thins Marae is special. It is new living Marae at the present day.
My English is not enogh, but I also studyed a lot from the conversation with you.

I hope I visit you again. Thank you so much!!

Kia ora Bruce,

On the 13th-16th of Decemmer 2009 a group of East Coast people stayed at Tapu te Ranga, our reason for being in Wellington was an urgent inquiry into east coast waitangi treaty claims.
Whereas Te Runanga o Ngati Porou are trying to extinguish the separate and distinct ancient identities of people on the east coast by assuming they represent all people on the east coast. I represent Te Hapuoneone and had a very peacful stay at your kainga, the wairua of the place is good. I am wishing to return one day with my children and conduct research plus visit the museum etc.

Dear Bruce,

I am doing a university paper to learn more about Maori culture. My internet research always leads me to your website, and has made me realise how connected I feel to Tapu Te Ranga Marae.

I so enjoyed the conversations we used to have. I hope you are well.

Best regards,

Ruth ("Nurse Ruth")

Kia ora Bruce and Whanau,

Thank you for hosting us at your Marae for our Maori Perspectives workshop. The venue was excellent and brought back many happy memories from my childhood as I used to go riding at the horse riding school that was there before the Marae. I have to mention the wonderful pumpkin soup we had as it was the nicest I have eaten.

Thank-you to the Stewart family - Bruce, Halima and the children for allowing us a very warm and hospitable stay at Tapu Te Ranga Marae. I stayed there with the international team for the launch of the World March for Peace and Non Violence in Wellington, on Ocober the 2nd, 2009. Their hospitality was very considerate, friendly and warm. We all had what we needed, were well fed and had warm sleeping quarters. The Marae itself is an amazing place and well worth visiting. It is set on acres of natural bush in Island Bay close to downtown Wellington. A must to visit. Thank-you, Aroha Sandra

Tena koe te Rangatira me to whanau.
You welcomed us with open arms and made us part of your whanau. Your whare embraced us with warmth and care and looked after us during our stay.
It was wonderful to see the dreams and aspirations of one person come to life in what you have built, a whare for the many. You are like a masiah thinking of the well-being of others and ensuring if anything happens, there will always be a place at Tapu te Ranga for all ethnics.

Hi there,

I am from the Art of Living Foundation. We have used the Marae on several occassions and we find ourselves drawn to this place.

Its a very scenic, spacious place and the owners of this place are absolutely amazing! We had a Art of Living refresher course last Saturday, and people who came for the course just loved the place :)

The owners of this place made us feel so welcomed and they were a part of our event too. We left the place feeling that we were a part of their family :) And its absolutely amazing how they respect people from different cultures and provides an absolute insight to our Maori tradition.

I will strongly recommend this place to all :)

Today is ANZAC 2009.I have been watching excellent coverage on Maori TV. All day I’ve felt the presence of my cousin Haere Hirini. He was killed in Vietnam. Some time ago my whanau rang and asked me if I’d march for Haere….. the country was going to pay respects to those Veterans…… The Civic centre was packed…thousands including Vietnam Vets from USA-Australia. Up Front of this mile long procession were thirty five flags representing those who were killed. We carried the flags for our loved ones the military band clearing the way ahead. Overhead jets flew in formation-big guns boomed and crowds clapped…cheered. With only one walking stick, I was having a job keeping up as Haere’s flag was in the other hand. Others were also struggling….none of us were ‘spring chickens’…. some one yelled for them to, “Slow down or one of us will crash.” After the official part… Haere’s SAS mates asked me to join them for a beer a kind of ‘hakari. ‘What happened’ I asked. ‘We were moving forward, slowly, softly and lightly for we knew ‘they’ were there. Haere was left-handed, a scout right off to one wing...
All hell broke loose he went down. We cleaned them up…we came back but
he was already dead. We carried him for three days it was too hostile to call in a chopper.
All the time Haers’s flag was leaning against the bar. I asked if I could take it back to put in our Marae, “He stays with us!” was their quick, short reply. They sent a photo, it hangs
In our Whare Tupuna.
